COHERENT STORYLINES AND PHENOMENA
STEMscopes NGSS 3D is organized into units (bundles), chapters (scopes), and lessons (hands-on Explores) that build upon each other to form a sequence of performance expectations (mission action plan). Publishers often misrepresent coherence as a method of teaching by numbered steps and ordered content. However, coherence in the NGSS allows students to explore a variety of phenomena and apply the three dimensions to real-world concepts using prior knowledge and new understandings.

LESSON DESIGN
Each scope is built on the 5E lesson model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—and lessons are scaffolded to build upon the previous lesson’s three-dimensional learning. Throughout each scope, teachers can access resources for extra support and differentiation, including Intervention and Acceleration, to meet the needs of every unique learner.
LAYERED PHENOMENA
Each bundle begins with an anchoring phenomena event, driving question, and mission action plan. Together, these elements drive the instructional focus of the scopes within a bundle. Scopes also include investigative and everyday phenomena that progressively build student knowledge toward the unit’s anchoring phenomena and culminate in the bundle’s mission action plan.
