Our Approach to Teaching and Learning

STEMscopes Science™ Texas is built on a solid foundation of proven educational strategies and integrates the Scientific and Engineering Practices (SEPs) and Recurring Themes and Concepts (RTCs) throughout. At the core of our curriculum is Dr. Roger Bybee’s renowned 5E learning model, which emphasizes hands-on and inquiry-based learning. But we didn’t stop there; we added unique components, Intervention and Acceleration (I + A), to ensure every student will excel.

Hands-on Kits

Our hands-on science kits correspond with the digital lessons and contain the resources you need to support experiential learning in your classrooms. Explore the two types of kits available, Hands-on Kits and Consumable Replenishment Kits.

    • Designed as a starter kit
    • Includes the most essential reusable and consumable items needed for hands-on activities
    • Items are grouped by topic
    • Contains materials for 24 students for grades K-4, or 32 students for grades 5-8

    *These kits do not contain common school supplies (paper, glue, scissors, etc.) or basic equipment

  2. Consumable Replenishment Kit
    • Includes the most essential of the consumable items used in the starter kit during previous years
    • Meant to replenish starter kit items used in previous years
    • Includes materials for 24 students for grades K-4, or 32 students for grades 5-8
    • One consumable kit per each additional section is recommended

  1. How is STEMscopes aligned to the 2024 Texas Essential Standards for Science?

    Our curriculum is 100% aligned with the latest TEKS standards. In fact, we started with the TEKS and then built a program tailor-made for Texas educators and students. STEMscopes Science™ Texas is designed to create meaningful learning experiences that integrate Scientific and Engineering Practices (SEPs) and Recurring Themes and Concepts (RTCs).

  2. How does the curriculum help students think like scientists?

    STEMscopes Science™ Texas encourages students to think like scientists by providing opportunities to engage in authentic scientific practices. Our curriculum ignites curiosity through custom phenomena, enabling students to actively participate in scientific inquiry.

    Through hands-on lessons, students take ownership of their learning, ask questions, make observations, analyze data, and draw evidence-based conclusions. They are prompted to think critically, evaluate information, and propose solutions to real-world problems. Students learn to think systematically, develop logical reasoning, and apply the scientific method by engaging in these practices.

    Our curriculum incorporates interdisciplinary connections, empowering students to see connections between science and other subjects such as mathematics, technology, and literacy. This comprehensive approach helps students understand how science is integrated into various aspects of their lives.

    STEMscopes Science™ Texas provides a comprehensive framework that empowers students to think like scientists. It nurtures their inquisitive nature, hones their analytical skills, and prepares them to become critical thinkers who can contribute to advancing scientific knowledge and address future challenges.

  3. What influenced your choice of phenomena?

    We chose custom, fascinating phenomena to provide students with real-life experiences that show the content in application. This provides a common experience for students to anchor their learning and refer to as they progress through the learning in the Scope (unit). Students will experience different phenomena in each Scope, as well as in other grade levels.

  4. What is the strongest attribute of your program?

    Students get to authentically experience science with hands-on activities! Our hands-on curriculum is integrated with our robust digital platform and comprehensively covers all aspects of the standards.

  5. What differentiation resources and supports do you provide students with diverse needs?

    Through inquiry-based, hands-on learning, STEMscopes’ 5E + IA approach integrates differentiation into each activity, supporting students as they grow and achieve in science. Intervention contains guided and focused tiered instruction for students needing extra support, while Acceleration offers additional enrichment opportunities. STEMscopes Science™ also includes strategies and resources to support Language Learners.

    STEMscopes Science™ allows for the flexibility teachers need to adapt to students’ learning. Teachers have the freedom to adjust the pace and depth of instruction to meet the diverse needs of their classes. This flexibility enables teachers to provide additional support, revisit concepts, or provide extension opportunities based on individual student progress and understanding.

    Our curriculum incorporates a variety of learning modalities to accommodate different learning styles. We include opportunities for hands-on activities, visual representations, interactive simulations, collaborative discussions, and more. By appealing to different learning preferences, STEMscopes Science™ ensures that students can access and engage with the content in ways that best suit their strengths.

  6. What type of multilingual resources and supports are incorporated into the program?

    Spanish translation is available for every aspect of our curriculum and digital platform. Additional languages are being researched.

  7. How are resources organized for teachers?

    Our resources are designed and organized to support all teachers. The STEMscopes framework provides the pedagogical foundation for the 5E + IA format and a glossary of STEMscopes-specific terms. Planning with STEMscopes includes scope and sequence, standards, student-friendly “I can…” statements, and materials needed. Instructional Support offers resources for fully implementing the standards, including scientific and engineering practices, recurring themes and concepts, and lab safety posters and contracts. Learner Supports equip teachers with specific strategies to support all students, including tiered intervention, language supports, and advanced strategies. Teachers can find literacy strategies and a digital sample of our Science Reader with Lexile® Measures in the Literacy Resources section. The Assessment section offers sample beginning-of-year (BOY) and end-of-year (EOY) assessments and releases STAAR questions as they are made available by the state.

  8. How do you secure student data?

    Our system requests and stores minimal student data: username, password, school grade level, homeroom, and assignment grades. We prioritize the safeguarding of your information by implementing comprehensive measures. When you submit information through our applications/platform, we employ multiple layers of protection to ensure the security of your data, both online and offline.

    We utilize advanced encryption techniques and Certificate-Based authentication to shield your information from unauthorized access online. This ensures that any data transmitted between your device and our servers remains confidential and protected. Offline, we store user data using state-of-the-art security technology, employing encryption measures to protect it at rest and in transit.

    While we strive to maintain your privacy and secure your information, it is essential to note that the security of information transmitted over personal Internet connections cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, any information you disclose in this manner is done so at your own risk.

    Rest assured that access to the data you provide is strictly limited to a limited set of employees who require it to perform their job duties. These individuals undergo stringent screening processes and are trained on data privacy before being granted secure administrative rights to ensure the protection of your data. Additionally, we store all data in AWS services, benefiting from AWS’s robust security features, like encryption at rest and key rotation.

    By employing these precautions, we aim to provide a secure environment for your information, but it’s important to acknowledge that no system is entirely immune to potential risks. We continuously monitor and update our security practices to adapt to emerging threats and maintain the highest data protection standards.

  10. What does a successful implementation look like?

    Implementation trainings introduce STEMscopes users to our platform through interactive experiences that align to the concepts, pedagogy, and activities featured in a standards-aligned scope. Participants explore essential scope components that support a constructivist, inquiry-based approach, as well as how the platform’s differentiation tools support all students in science learning. Advanced implementation trainings dive even deeper into the student experience and digital resources that help teachers optimize instruction, grading, and feedback time.

  11. What type of support and professional development do you offer beyond the initial onboarding training?

    Strong scientific pedagogy starts with a true understanding of the process in which students learn best. Our STEM Coaches provide training on specific aspects of our resources, like the Teacher Toolbox, but also on scientific best practices such as integrating literacy elements into lessons, helping students write strong scientific conclusions with Claim-Evidence-Reasoning, developing and using models, supporting multilingual learners in your science classrooms, and more. We also offer small-group sessions to help teachers pace and plan lessons, guidance and feedback on the use of our 5E + IA resources, and even administrator coaching to help identify which best practices to look for in science classrooms.
