A student-led discovery activity where learners engage with key concepts that may not yet be formalized.
- Lesson Summary
A student-friendly recap of the lesson, highlighting key takeaways, vocabulary, and examples. These summaries can serve as guided notes during and after the lesson.
- Practice Problems
Each lesson includes a set of practice problems, featuring both lesson-specific exercises and spiral review (labeled Review Problems) to reinforce past learning. These problems are intended for independent practice.

- How is Math Nation California similar to Illustrative Mathematics®?
Math Nation California is built on the trusted foundation of Illustrative Mathematics® IM K–12 Math™, but as a non-certified partner we have the flexibility to adapt the program to user feedback and real classroom needs. This problem-based curriculum is aligned with the California Mathematics Framework and emphasizes deep conceptual understanding, real-world applications, and student-centered learning. Math Nation California enhances this Illustrative Mathematics® approach with interactive videos, a user friendly Teacher Edition, personalized learning tools, built-in intervention, and digital resources, making the content more engaging and accessible for both students and teachers.
- Is Professional Development included for educators?
Yes! In-depth implementation training for teachers, leaders, and instructional coaches is included through a virtual format. Our virtual Foundational Training courses offer an immersive experience, modeling the problem-based teaching philosophy while guiding participants through the Math Nation California’s platform from both student and teacher perspectives. Yes! Math Nation California has a high school program for the Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra II pathway. In addition (coming soon!), Math Nation California will also have the Integrated Math pathway with teacher and student materials (print and digital) for Math I, Math II, and Math III. Math Nation California offers targeted resources to support students at the Emerging, Expanding, and Bridging levels, ensuring all learners can succeed in math. This curriculum builds on foundational principles for supporting language development for all students and aims to provide guidance to help teachers recognize and support students’ language development in the context of mathematical sense-making. Embedded within the curriculum are instructional supports and practices to help teachers address the specialized academic language demands in math when planning and delivering lessons, including the demands of reading, writing, speaking, listening, conversing, and representing in math (Aguirre & Bunch, 2012). Therefore, while these instructional supports and practices can and should be used to support all students learning mathematics, they are particularly well-suited to meet the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students who are learning mathematics while simultaneously acquiring English.
Math Nation California’s multilingual and English learner supports are thoughtfully designed to meet students at their current level and accelerate their progress toward grade-level math mastery. These tiered supports empower students to advance independently, both at school and at home. All lesson components, including print workbooks and instructional videos, are available in English and Spanish, digital workbooks have been translated into over 100 languages, and embedded glossary videos are offered in English, Spanish, American Sign Language, and more. Additionally, each lesson guide (print and digital) includes specific guidance for teachers supporting multilingual learners for every single activity in the lesson. Our program aligns with the California Math Framework, emphasizing language development, language scaffolding, culturally relevant content, and family and community engagement to ensure equitable access to high-quality math instruction.
